HIS FIRST YEAR AT SCHOOL.

By ALFRED WEST. With Frontispiece. Crown 8vo, cloth, 5s.

"Mr. West's book, which is written for boys and their parents,' is a notable contribution to the literature of school-life. . . It is quite as natural and life-like as the admirable stories of Mr. Talbot Baines Reed, and does not suffer from the rather obtrusive morality which was dragged into most of these books, whilst it is leagues in front of such maukish stuff as that which Dean Farrar has produced."-The New Saturday.

Translated by ELLA R. CHRISTIE from the Swedish of ZACK TOPELIUS. 6 Illustrations by ADA HOLLAND. Crown 8vo, cloth gilt, 3s. 6d.

The literature of few countries in Europe has received less attention than that of Finland, and not many are so rich in tales of poetic imagination as the country of Topelius, the Hans Andersen of Sweden. Topelius is by birth and sympathy a Finn, though the language he employs is Swedish All through his works there breathes the spirit of patriotism and devotion to his country in all its aspects, and his tales of Fairyland are familiar to every child in Sweden, although hitherto practically unknown to England.

BRER MORTAL. By BEN MARLAS. Illustrated by MARK ZANGWILL. Crown 8vo, cloth, 5s. This is a subtle allegory on Mrs. Grundy and the world which takes the apparently simple form of a child's story. Indeed the double-entendre is so skilfully manipulated that a child may fancy he is listening to a new Uncle Remus right the way through the story, while the grown-up is laughing at the quips and cranks of the Spirit of Satire.

BRER MORTAL AND THE PALEO.
(From "Brer Mortal.')

THE COUNTRY OF THE POINTED FIRS.

By SARAH ORNE JEWETT, Author of "The Life of Nancy," "Deephaven," etc.

16mo, cloth, 5s.

This book shows Miss Jewett at her best. It reveals in a delightful way the leading characteristics of her style. It is not a novel, but a group of stories suggested by a summer spent on the Coast of Maine and the adjacent islands. A landlady, her mother and brother, and other persons figure in them, yet scarcely as characters in a fiction, so plainly do they bear the imprint and interest of real life. Not less attractive than the stories themselves are Miss Jewett's descriptions of the people and customs of the villages and the islands, and her humorous yet sympathetic observations on the oddities which the time and the locality disclosed.

compact and careful."-Globe.

THE BALKANS. By W. MILLER, M.A.

"If ever there was a book that deserved the title of 'the book of the hour, Mr. Miller's is that book."-Methodist Times.

BRITISH INDIA. By R. W. FRAZER, LL.B.

Every effort has been made to include in this volume of the "Story of the Nations" series the results of the recent researches in Indian history. The course of ancient commerce between the East and West, the rise and fall of the Portuguese settlements in India, the accounts of the early English travellers and details of the first voyages are plainly set forth. Throughout the story the main facts which led to the extension of territorial possession are dwelt on and the result of each step forward traced. The most recent events are included, and an account is given of the moral and material progress of the people under British rule.
