THE ALTRUIST.

By OUIDA, Author of " Toxin," "The Silver Christ," etc.

Ouida has found a congenial subject in this story of the breaking-down of social reserve in favour of humanity. Will the Altruist marry the washerwoman? This is the question that the reader will revolve in his mind as he passes in and out of Piccadilly into the more retired scenes of this characteristic story.

AN IMPOSSIBLE PERSON. By CONSTANCE COTTERELL.

"Fantastic as Miss Cotterell's little romance may be, there lies below the surface a world of pathos and grim truth."-Morning Leader.

WAS IT ABSURD? By COSMO HAMILTON.

This is in the nature of a satire, but it is excellent narrative as well. The Colonel's man-servant enioys the reputation and the privileges of an Earl for several days. Ladies propose to him. His vulgarity is accounted unto him for righteousness. A little honesty remains at bottom, however, discernible by the eager reader. Mr. Hamilton is a well-known actor, and it is believed that a very effective play will shortly be staged on the grounds of his story.

BISHOP DOYLE.

Paper, Is.; cloth, 25.

A Biographical and Historical Study. By MICHAEL MACDONAGH.

The subject of this Memoir, who was a Catholic Bishop of Kildare and Leighlin from 1819 to 1834 has been truly described as the most eminent Irish prelate of the Catholic Church since the Reforma tion. He was the principal combatant of the movement known as "the second Reformation "—a mission started in 1827 by the authorities of the Established Church in Ireland to lead the Roman Catholics into the fold of Protestanism; and his controversial writings, published under the initials “J. K. L.”—James, Kildare and Leighlin-had an immense circulation in Ireland. He created, a the same time, a profound sensation by issuing a scheme for the reunion of the warring Churcheswhich shows his tolerance and broad-mindedness, but which excited the hostility of his broth prelates, and even aroused suspicions of his orthodoxy. He was even more remarkable as a politician and publicist than as a spiritual force. He was the first Bishop to break away from the attitude of subservient loyalty to the English Government which the Irish Catholic prelates had observed all through the eighteenth and far into the nineteenth centuries, and has, therefore, been not inaptly designated "the first of the patriot prelates." He was a conspicuous figure in the Catholic emancipation movement, and in the fierce agitation for the abolition of the tithes which followed, rivalling for a time even Daniel O'Connell in popularity, and was besides instrumental in establishing the present system of national education, and of having the English Poor Law extended to Ireland Mr. Gladstone in his famous pamphlet “ Vatican Decrees" refers to Dr. Doyle as "the prelate who more than any other represented his Church and influenced the mind of this country in favour of the concession of emancipation." The book deals with a most interesting transitional period of Irish history-from the Union to the inauguration of the Repeal Agitation by O'Connell in 1836-of which generally speaking little is known. It contains much information that is fresh and new concerning the support of the Union by the Catholic Episcopacy, the condition of the Catholic Church in Ireland. and the life of its priesthood during the first quarter of the present century, and throws many curious side lights on the methods of Daniel O'Connell as an agitator. The author, Mr. MacDonagh, is a London journalist.

From the few reviews that have as yet come to hand, we make the following excerpts :"Mr. Unwin's newest series of 'Little Novels,' printed in strong black type on pleasant paper.... promises to be as good, if not better, than any of the preceding ones. . . . The first book in the series is an extremely clever and original story of Australian society. . . The heroine, Jean Burnes, is one of the most charming girls we have met for a long time within the covers of a book."-Guardian. "Are readable . . . . . they promise well for the success of the series that they begin."-Scotsman "The 'Little Novels' series starts well with this Australian story [The World is Round'] ... Miss Mack's account of Sydney life is vivacious. . . . The two women she describes are brought before us with ability. Much of the dialogue, and certainly a letter from the Bush, deserves praise -Glasgow Herald.

"If Mr. Fisher Unwin's Little Novels' series produces many works of the quintessential power 'No Place for Repentance,' it will outweigh in all but bulk whole shelves of Mudie's fiction."

Illustrated London Ne "We do not apologise for telling the story of this little book, The Bond of Blood,' and giving long extracts from it. It is worth reading even when one knows all that is coming; for it is excellently told, with concentrated force, great simplicity, and a very remarkable attention to illustrative detail."

RADA.

Spectator

The tale is well told, and intensely-even if almost morbidly-interesting."—Glasgow Herald. "As the story takes us to fresh fields, and shows us something of Roumanian character and ways, may be commended."-British Weekly.

"The little book will please readers who like an original study of a 'passion.'"-Scotsman.
