PUBLISHERS' PREFACE.

IN the following pages the cultivation of trees has been fully treated of by an author of great practical experience. He has dealt with the subject from every point of view, and his work will be found of singular utility to all who farm plantations for the sake o a pecuniary return. We also recommend it to the notice of those who devote themselves to the planting of trees chiefly with an eye to the picturesque and beautiful.

Too little attention has hitherto been paid to the adaptation of the kind of trees that are planted to the soil and climate, and to this cause many failures are to be ascribed. The author, however, has gone carefully into this subject, and we believe has touched upon every circumstance calculated to secure success.

"Trees and How to Grow Them," we may add, forms one of our series of handbooks in which all matters relating to rural life are clearly and popularly treated, and it will certainly not be found inferior to any of its predecessors either in point of interest or in the care which has been devoted to its preparation.
